Mettle
The Citroën 2CV was never supposed to be this glamorous. It was designed to be inexpensive, practical, simple to repair, and tough enough to carry farmers and their cargo across rough French roads without turning a basket of eggs into breakfast. Then somebody gave it those headlights. Nearly eight decades later, the little car built to solve a transportation problem has one of the most recognizable faces in automotive history. That is what drew me to this frame: not nostalgia, but character. I photographed this one almost head-on, low enough that the curves, chevrons and slightly improbable expression could do the talking. Durability and charm were never opposites — Citroën just happened to package both in blue.
